Improving Puppy Training Outcomes
UK Assistance Dog Charity · Blended Learning Programme
Based on real work within a UK assistance dog charity — all data and details fictionalised for confidentiality.
The Challenge
Staff lacked confidence coaching volunteers in distraction-management techniques
Internal data revealed puppies rated as highly distracted during puppy walking required longer training times. Puppy Walking Supervisors — front-line staff supporting around 30 volunteer puppy walkers each — needed upskilling, but operational managers reported limited time for staff training, requiring time-efficient, practice-relevant solutions.
The Audience
Puppy Walking Supervisors
Front-line staff who each support around 30 volunteer puppy walkers. They needed to build confidence and practical skills in distraction-management coaching while balancing demanding caseloads.
Learning Objectives
Building knowledge, confidence, and practical skills
- Differentiate managing existing vs. training new behaviours
- Apply the engage/disengage game for canine calm and focus
- Design puppy classes with clear goals and relaxation strategies
- Demonstrate effective coaching through positivity and skill-breaking
- Develop and implement short puppy sessions integrating learning theory
The Solution
A blended e-learning and practical coaching package
The programme combined interactive e-learning covering theory and practical applications with scenario-based activities including drag-and-drop exercises, timing practice, and coaching dialogue simulations. Practical assessment tasks required puppy class plan submissions and video demonstrations. Following Phase 1 feedback, a podcast interview was added for accessible real-world reflections.
